Lion is the Devil? Rrrr…

Lion at Phoenix ZooOkay – you all know my inherent distrust of anything that calls itself “organized religion.” Normally, I leave everyone well enough alone – believe what you like, let me believe what I like, and let’s all try to be fair and kind and just.

Today, however, a Floridian “preacher” has taken his church to a new low and has inspired this writer to new levels of anger.

“Pastor” Troy Gramling’s sermon this week featured a 500-lb captive lion in a tiny cage – a lion that he used as a metaphor for “the devil”. In doing so, he was effective in accomplishing one thing: Inspiring the rage of animal advocates on an international level – enough to want to bring his web of lies crumbling down to the lowest level of Hell where it belongs.

I’m sure this is part of his “overall plan.” I’m sure he’s seeking the PR that such a bold move would give him. I’m also sure that he has effectively inspired the wrath of millions of animal lovers, none of whom will ever set foot in his “church.” Just not going to his church is not enough. We need to raise awareness of the problems stemming from using animals in any type of environment such as this.

But, for a moment, let’s take a second to discredit and ridicule Gramling, who obviously does not know or understand anything within his own religion and should not be in front of – well, anyone – preaching his pathetic excuse for a sermon.

Assuming I were religious (which as far as I’m concerned is very different from spiritual – just to clarify – I have some complex spiritual beliefs, I just don’t believe in “organized religion” but that’s me!),  Either way,  the lion is not what I would view as a symbol of the devil.  Since the dawn of man, the lion has enjoyed an overly positive view in religion beginning as early as the Paleolithic era over 32,000 years ago when lions were depicted on the walls of caves – through ancient Mesopotamia where the lion was associated with kingship, and beyond. In fact, for nearly two thousand years, the lion has traditionally been used as a symbol of Christ.

And this idiot has taken that symbol of Christ – he has chained it, caged it, placed it at the pulpit, and talked about it for over an hour as being a symbol of the Devil. I don’t care who you are or what you believe – that should piss you off.

According to Gramling, the lion is referred to in Peter 5:8, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour. ”

Well, Gramling… The lion is referred to in many passages in the “bible.” Want a list? Here’s a very short one for you:

Judges 14:8; 1 Kings 13:24; Isaiah 30:6; 65:25; Daniel 6:7; Ezekiel 1:10; 1 Peter 5:8; Revelation 4:7; 13:2

No matter what you believe, the last time I checked, religion should be preaching compassion for all living things, not hatred and fear.

What this guy has done is so far below compassionate that I think he himself may be Evil incarnate, masquerading his cruel little wildlife theme in a horrific attempt to draw mindless, heartless drones in to watch his pathetic “sermon.”

Big Cat Rescue, like us, had some choice words for this horrible excuse for a man and has done some research on the “handler” of the lion.

“There was only a man sitting next to the cage, a man with some interesting views about wildlife. Jeremy Possman, of Predators Unlimited, supplied this lion for the ‘show.’ He is an alligator wrestler who admits that business has pretty much dried up in that area.  So, he has turned to photo ops and traveling exhibits with wild animals.

He was quoted in an AP story saying, ‘If you do get bit, a lot of times that just means more business, because they’re going to come back to see if it’s going to happen again.”

Well, Jeremy – one can only hope…

I’m not posting the video clip because I don’t want this guy to end up with a viral video. But hey – don’t worry if you missed it – next week’s sermon will include live cobras as a metaphor for original sin!

Folks, we need to take some action against this. Not only is this guy pure evil, he’s using vulnerable animals at the pulpit. Animals belong in the wild, not at the pulpit. Not in a cage. Not to illustrate some idiot’s point.

Let’s take some time to SHUT HIM DOWN and SHUT HIM UP!

Help take this guy out of the running. To access some letters that need to be mailed or emailed ASAP, click here or visit: http://capwiz.com/bigcatrescue/issues/alert/?alertid=16980506&type=ML

And if anyone wants to start spouting scripture at me, don’t waste your breath.  I’ll be replying with one of the following:

Proverbs 12:10 “A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast.”

Ecclesiastes 3:19 “For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.

  1. I have already written a long letter to this so-called pastor. Now I have some serious questions to ask the guy who “lent” the lion. I have gone on the web for Jeremy possman, Predators Unlimited but cannot find a link to leave an email message. In fact there is a link but it goes nowhere …. perhaps he doesn’t want to hear criticism. I want to know why he has cubs – of any species. I am suspicious that he is allowing breeding – which we all know means he is simply breeding babies for his short term profit and these surplus babies – once grown will be discarded in the worst ways. If you can get a lead on Possman’s email address, please forward to me. We need to expose this guy for what he is – a profiteer – and an unwitting public is supporting his despicable deeds.
